Techniques of tool movement

Rakes and jiggler tools can be operated in a number of ways. They can be held almost perfectly horizontally and moved directly along the bottom surface of the key pins in a lock, as depicted in Figure 3.35. This same motion (a direct in-out movement perfectly parallel to the pins) can be performed with the rake held at varying angles, as depicted in Figure 3.36. Jiggler tools, on the other hand, are often used with a much greater focus on “vertical” movements accompanying any in-out motion. A series of punctuated up and down motions can force the pins or wafers dramatically, as you hope to catch most or all of them close to the shear line at the same time. This motion (shown in Figure 3.37) is less commonly done with a rake pick, but it can still be attempted if the need arises… particularly with wafer locks. Of course, there are also tools like the famous Bogotá picks (which will be discussed further in the Appendix: Guide to Tools and Toolkits) and they can indeed be used in this fashion to great effect. The last style of typical rake and jiggler usage could be called the “elliptical” movement. Like a piston connected to a crankshaft, the tip of your rake or jiggler tool is worked in and out of the lock while the handle is moved in large, curved arcs. This results in relatively straight in-out movement of the tool’s working surface, but with the additional virtue of many small fluctuations on the angle of attack at which the tip is being held. The elliptical style of movement is depicted in Figure 3.38.
